Shreyas Iyer Hits Career-Best No. 4 in ICC T20I Rankings

The ICC released its latest T20I batting rankings on Wednesday, and India’s captain is the biggest mover. Shreyas Iyer has climbed three places to a career-best No. 4 in the ICC T20I rankings, turning one famous night in Lucknow into a personal milestone eight days later.

This is the story of a hundred that kept working long after the lights went out.

The hundred that started it

On October 6, in the series opener against the West Indies in Lucknow, Iyer smashed his maiden T20I century. It was the kind of innings that ends debates. For years the knock on him in this format was pace: too much grind, not enough gear changes. The Lucknow hundred had all the gears.

What makes the ranking jump interesting is how little else he needed to do. Per the ICC’s press release, the update reflects the ongoing five-match home series against the West Indies, and Iyer rose on the back of that one innings plus steady contributions. Rankings are a lagging indicator. Sometimes they lag beautifully.

Here is a small detail worth sitting with: per Sportskeeda’s reading of the update, Iyer gained 12 rating points and now sits on 798 rating points, and he did it despite two quiet outings after the previous update, 40 off 18 balls and 1 off 2. The hundred did the heavy lifting. That is how T20 rankings work. One night of undeniable brilliance outweighs a fortnight of decent.

What the ICC T20I rankings now show

The top of the table has a distinctly Indian accent. Ishan Kishan holds No. 1. Abhishek Sharma sits at No. 2. Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan is sandwiched between them at No. 3 with a career-best rating of his own after a strong series against Sri Lanka, per the ICC.

And now Iyer at No. 4, his highest position ever. Three of the top four batters in the world play for India. The ICC’s update also has India with three batters in the top five and four in the top ten, the most of any nation, per Outlook India’s report of the release. Sanju Samson climbed four rungs to joint 27th.

That last number matters more than it looks. Rankings tables usually describe individuals. This one describes a system. When four of your batters sit in the world’s top ten, you are not riding one player’s hot streak. You are watching a pipeline fire on all cylinders. Kishan’s fearlessness at the top, Abhishek’s destruction, and now the captain joining them in the elite bracket: this is what depth looks like when it gets a number attached.

It also continues a fine 24 hours for Indian cricket in ICC award land. The rankings arrived a day after Gill and Shafali swept the ICC’s monthly awards for September. Different trophies, same message. Right now, Indian batting is setting the standard the rest of the world is measured against.

Rankings lag. Form doesn’t.

Iyer knows better than to frame a ranking as a destination. He has spent his career being told what he cannot do in white-ball cricket, then doing it. The century in Lucknow was his answer to the T20 question. The No. 4 beside his name is the receipt.

There is a timing angle here that his team will not mind at all. The series moves to Hyderabad on Wednesday night for the fourth T20I, with India leading 2-1 and able to seal the series in Hyderabad tonight. Iyer walks out as the newly minted world No. 4, in the middle of the very series that put him there. Rankings are decided in Dubai offices. Reputations are decided in the middle, under lights, with a series on the line.

The ICC says India owns T20 batting right now. Tonight in Hyderabad, the captain gets to make the case all over again, one innings at a time.
