Volkswagen has finally put a date on the Virtus facelift. The updated sedan will launch in India on December 11, 2026, according to dealer sources quoted by Times of India Auto, and the first official teaser is already out. The Virtus facelift launch comes more than four years after the current car went on sale in June 2022, and it is the first major update the sedan has received since then, carandbike reported. For a car that has quietly carried Volkswagen’s India volumes while the Taigun took the SUV spotlight, the timing makes sense: December is when buyers start shopping for the new year, and VW clearly wants the refreshed Virtus in that conversation.

What the teaser actually shows

The teaser does not hide much. Volkswagen has reworked the front bumper and grille, fitted new alloy wheels and revised the lighting, TOI Auto reported, and the car in the clip wears GT badging and a cleaner front end. The headlamps get separate daytime running lights, and the side mirrors carry integrated camera housings, which points to a 360-degree camera joining the equipment list. What the teaser does not show is the cabin, and Volkswagen has said nothing about it yet. Reports suggest the facelift will borrow the 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and the newer infotainment system from the updated Taigun, TOI Auto reported, but until VW opens the doors, treat that as an expectation, not a fact.

The gearbox is the real story

Styling will get the attention, but the mechanical change matters more. The 1.0-litre TSI, which makes 113 bhp and 178 Nm according to TOI Auto, is expected to swap its six-speed automatic for a new eight-speed torque converter unit. The 1.5-litre TSI, with 148 bhp and 250 Nm, should carry on with its seven-speed DSG, and a manual will stay on the 1.0-litre car. Here is the part buyers should take comfort from: this gearbox is not a first-time experiment. The same eight-speed automatic already serves in the updated Taigun, Kushaq and Slavia this year, carandbike reported, which means the Virtus is inheriting proven hardware rather than asking early buyers to debug it. In a segment where a rough gearbox can sink an otherwise good car, that is worth more than a new bumper.

What the Virtus facelift will cost

Volkswagen has not announced prices, and the current Virtus costs between Rs 10.71 lakh and Rs 19.20 lakh, ex-showroom, TOI Auto reported. CarToq expects the facelift to start at around Rs 12 lakh, but that is the portal’s estimate, not a company figure, and the real number lands on December 11. The launch puts the Virtus straight up against its own sibling, the Skoda Slavia, which received its facelift on October 6 priced from Rs 10 lakh, according to ZigWheels. That sets a useful marker: if the Virtus opens much above the Slavia, Volkswagen will be asking buyers to pay a premium for the same mechanical package in a different suit. If it lands near it, the choice between the two siblings comes down to badge, styling and which dealer is closer to home. Beyond the family, the usual sedan rivals wait too, the Hyundai Verna and the Honda City, neither of which has had a refresh this year.

Sedans are supposed to be dying in India, and yet VW keeps investing in this one, which tells you the Virtus still earns its keep. The facelift does not need to reinvent the car. It needs to fix the two things buyers actually complained about: the missing 360-degree camera and an automatic that felt a generation behind. On paper, both are now addressed, and December is shaping up to be a busy month for launches, with the Denza Z9 GT arriving on November 13 and the Mercedes GLC Electric already setting the pace for premium electrics.

December 11 will settle the only question that matters, which is the price. If Volkswagen holds the entry point close to where it is today, the facelift gives sedan buyers a genuinely fresh option at a moment when most of the attention, and most of the marketing money, is chasing SUVs. If the price jumps, the Virtus will have to lean on the gearbox and the kit to justify it. Either way, the sedan that was supposed to fade away is getting a second act, and it arrives just in time for the new year.
