Azam Khan ED Arrest Minutes After Jail Release

He walked out of Rampur district jail a free man on Saturday morning. By the time the cameras had finished filming his release, he was in custody again.

That is the short version of the Azam Khan ED arrest, and it is why the story travelled so fast on Saturday. The Samajwadi Party leader had spent close to a year behind bars. His freedom lasted minutes, not days, because an Enforcement Directorate team was already waiting at the jail gate.

A release that lasted minutes

Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam walked out of Rampur jail on October 31 after the Allahabad High Court suspended their 10-year sentence in a PAN card case and granted them bail on October 29, The New Indian Express reported. The two had been lodged in jail since November 17, 2025, close to 11 months in custody.

Abdullah went home. His father did not. ED officials questioned Azam Khan outside the jail and then took him into custody in a separate money laundering case, the Times of India reported. An ED official from the Lucknow zonal office told Hindustan Times, as reported by Outlook: “We have apprehended Azam Khan. After following arrest procedures, we will arrest him and produce him before the Ghaziabad PMLA court.”

The court production is expected on Sunday, November 1, before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act court in Ghaziabad, according to The News Mill.

Why the Azam Khan ED arrest happened now

The ED case is not the case Khan just got bail in. That distinction matters, because it explains why a high court order did not keep him out.

The money laundering probe centres on the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust and Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur, the university Khan founded in 2006. The ED case, built on a 2019 Enforcement Case Information Report, alleges financial irregularities and land grabbing linked to the trust and the university, the Times of India reported.

Three dates tell the story of how the case reached the jail gate. On August 19, the ED searched 10 locations linked to Khan in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, seizing electronic devices and documents, Oneindia reported. On October 13, ED officials questioned Khan inside Rampur jail. On October 28, the agency provisionally attached the university’s land and buildings.

The figures in the attachment are large, and they are the ED’s assessment, not a court finding. The agency said it identified Rs 426.46 crore as alleged proceeds of crime, while the attached properties carry an estimated current market value of Rs 1,170 crore, according to The News Mill and Outlook. The New Indian Express reported that the FIR in the case cites alleged unexplained expenditure of Rs 416.14 crore on the university’s construction. Khan and the trust’s office-bearers have, according to the ED, failed to give a satisfactory explanation for the funds.

The politics of a jail-gate arrest

Khan did not stay silent as he was taken away. In remarks carried by the Times of India and Oneindia, he described his arrest as punishment for being a Muslim. That line will now do most of the political work around this case, whatever the court record says.

It lands in a week when opposition politics in Delhi has already been loud. The INDIA bloc staged a public impeachment of the Chief Election Commissioner on Saturday afternoon, and the Samajwadi Party is part of that bloc. The arrest gives the opposition a second, sharper story for the same weekend: a senior leader freed by one court and picked up by a central agency at the gate.

The counter-argument, which the ED will make in court, is procedural. The agency says this is a separate case, built over years, with searches, questioning and an attachment order that all predate Saturday’s release. A bail in one case does not cancel an arrest in another. That is legally straightforward, and it is why Sunday’s hearing matters more than the shouting outside the jail.

One caution on the numbers: the Rs 1,170 crore figure is the estimated market value of attached university property, not a personal fortune, Oneindia pointed out.

What happens next

Sunday’s production before the Ghaziabad PMLA court is the first test. The court will decide whether Khan stays in ED custody for interrogation or goes to judicial custody, and the agency will have to lay out what it still needs from him that it could not get during the jail questioning on October 13.

Beyond that, the case will turn on documents, not drama: whether the trust’s funding trail holds up, and whether the attachment of university property survives legal challenge. Universities do not usually sit at the centre of money laundering cases. This one does, because it was built by a politician, funded through a trust he controls, and now valued by the ED in hundreds of crores.

The courts have been setting much of this week’s news agenda, from the Supreme Court’s order on banks and digital arrest victims to Saturday’s jail-gate arrest. The difference with this story is the image it leaves behind: a man who waited nearly a year for a court order, then lost his freedom again before he had left the jail road. That image will outlast whatever the Ghaziabad court decides on Sunday, and both sides know it.
