Xiaomi’s newest budget 5G phone officially lands in India today, October 1. The Redmi 17C 5G price in India is still unannounced at the time of writing, but we have a strong hint from Singapore, where the phone already launched at SGD 279. That converts to roughly Rs 21,000 for the base 4GB + 128GB variant.
Here is my honest first reaction to the spec sheet: this looks like the Redmi 15C wearing a new jacket. Same chip, same screen, same battery. If you were hoping for a generational leap, temper those expectations now.
This is the Redmi 15C with a new haircut
Let’s not pretend otherwise. The Dimensity 6300 returns for another lap, paired with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage. The 6.9-inch HD+ LCD with 120Hz refresh rate is back. The 50MP rear camera and 8MP front camera are back. The 6000mAh battery with 33W charging, charger included in the box, is back.
Is that a problem? Depends on the price. Redmi has a habit of refreshing budget phones with small changes and big marketing slogans, this one ships with “Main Character Energy”, whatever that means for a phone. If the India pricing lands where we expect, this is a fine, familiar budget phone. If Xiaomi gets greedy and prices it closer to Rs 24,000, the Redmi 15C’s higher-memory variants start looking like the smarter buy overnight.
That HD+ screen is the sore spot
Of all the specs Xiaomi could have upgraded, the display was the obvious one. A 6.9-inch panel at 720p works out to just 254 pixels per inch. Text will look soft. You will notice it. Phones a tier below this have been doing Full HD for years, and a screen this big with this few pixels feels like a decision made in a spreadsheet, not for the person holding the phone.
To be fair, the panel does run at 120Hz, reaches 810 nits, and gets Wet Touch 2.0, which keeps touch working with damp or oily fingers. Those are genuinely useful additions. But they are garnish on a display that needed a resolution bump, not more features.
One small aside from real life: a 6.9-inch phone is a two-handed device. It is lovely on the couch and miserable in a crowded metro with one hand on a grab rail. Budget phones keep getting bigger while our pockets and palms stay the same size. Somebody has to say it.
Redmi 17C 5G price in India: what it should cost
The Singapore price of SGD 279 is the only hard number we have, pointing at Rs 21,000 give or take a few hundred. Realistically, Xiaomi will price the base variant somewhere between Rs 19,999 and Rs 21,999, and lean on festive-season bank offers to make the headline number look friendlier.
The budget field this phone walks into is crowded. The Lava Virat Curve 5G launched at Rs 19,999 with a curved AMOLED panel and a working rear mini display, which makes the 17C’s plain HD+ screen look even plainer at a similar price. Even higher up the ladder, this year’s component cost squeeze has pushed brands into uncomfortable pricing, like Nothing selling 6GB variants of the Phone 4a at Rs 39,999. Xiaomi’s best play is to undercut aggressively, not to follow the crowd upward.
The battery is the one thing nobody will argue about
A 6000mAh battery with 33W fast charging and the charger in the box. No complaints here. Xiaomi claims the cell retains at least 80 percent of its capacity after 1,000 charge cycles, which is better than most rivals promise at this price. For the buyer who charges overnight and forgets about the phone until the next evening, this is the spec that matters most, and it is genuinely solid.
Extras fill out the picture: Android 16 with HyperOS 3 out of the box, an IP64 rating, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, NFC, Bluetooth 5.4, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and even FM radio. Redmi clearly knows its audience here. These are the checkboxes budget buyers in India actually tick.
Verdict: wait for the launch price before deciding
The Redmi 17C 5G is a competent, familiar budget phone with one real weakness and one real strength. The weakness is that soft HD+ display. The strength is a big, long-lived battery with honest charging in the box. Everything else is last year’s hardware doing another tour.
If it launches near Rs 19,999, it is a reasonable buy for someone who needs a cheap 5G phone with a huge screen. If it drifts toward Rs 23,000 or beyond, skip it and pick up the Redmi 15C instead. Same phone, more RAM for your money. I will update this the moment Xiaomi confirms Indian pricing.
