Tata Passes Mahindra for No. 2 in October Sales

October 2026 gave India its tightest sales race in years, and the margin at the sharp end was almost comically small. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles sold 73,894 cars in India during the month, according to ETAuto and Business Today, citing the company’s sales release of 1 November. That put Tata ahead of Mahindra, which sold 73,338 SUVs, and into second place in the industry behind Maruti Suzuki. The gap between second and third was just 556 units.

To put that in perspective, the industry dispatched more than five lakh passenger vehicles in October, the first time it has ever crossed that mark in a month, ETAuto reported. Tata and Mahindra were separated by roughly one large dealership’s monthly tally. Neither company stumbled into this result. Mahindra had its best SUV month ever, and Tata had one of its best months outright, so second place changed hands because Tata grew faster, not because Mahindra slowed down. Tata’s domestic figure was up 21 percent on the 61,134 units of October 2025, Business Today reported.

The electric side of Tata’s month deserves its own paragraph, because it is where the company’s lead over its rivals looks most structural. Tata’s EV sales, counting domestic and international markets, rose 75 percent year on year to 16,244 units, ETAuto reported, up from 9,286 a year ago. That is more than one in five of Tata’s total passenger vehicle sales for the month, and it came in a month when the company’s Punch.ev became the first standalone EV model to cross 5,000 units in a month, according to CNBC-TV18. Walk into a Tata showroom today and the EV range is not a side display near the back. It is a full lineup, from the Tiago.ev up to the Harrier.ev, and October suggests buyers are treating it that way.

Step back from the monthly table and the Tata October sales story looks less like a one-off festive spike and more like a company hitting its stride across segments at once. The same month that delivered the No. 2 spot also delivered record EV volumes and a strong commercial vehicle performance, which is a combination none of its direct rivals matched in October. For rival watchers, the Tata October sales figures also sharpen the question facing Mahindra: its SUVs still sell in enormous numbers, but the gap to Tata is now measured in hundreds of units, and holding second place next month will take more than a good festive season. It will take defending showroom traffic in November, when Diwali buying is compressed into a single week.

Tata October sales beyond the headline

Total passenger vehicle sales, including exports, reached 75,426 units, up 23 percent on 61,295 a year ago, NDTV Profit reported. Exports were the eye-catching line inside that total, jumping to 1,532 units from just 161 in October 2025. The base was tiny, so the percentage flatters, but the direction matters: Tata is starting to sell meaningful numbers abroad, and that gives it a second engine beyond the Indian festive calendar.

The commercial vehicle business, reported separately under Tata Motors Ltd, had a strong month too, with total sales of 47,652 units, up 27 percent, TOI Auto reported. Domestic commercial sales rose 13 percent to 39,784 units. Put the two businesses together and Tata dispatched more than 1.23 lakh vehicles in October. That breadth is the quiet part of the story. A company that can grow cars, EVs and trucks in the same month is less exposed to any single segment cooling off, and October rewarded exactly that kind of breadth.

So what does second place actually mean for buyers? In the short term, very little changes at the showroom door. Tata and Mahindra will both keep pushing festive offers into November, with Diwali falling on 8 November, and both have waiting lists on their popular SUVs. The real read is longer term. Tata’s October shows a company whose EV bet is now paying in volume, not just headlines, while Mahindra’s month shows an SUV franchise strong enough to set records from an already huge base. The fight for second is now a genuine rivalry rather than a gap, and the next few months will show whether Tata can hold the spot once the festive rush fades. November registrations, not dispatches, will be the honest test, and they arrive in early December.
