Apple’s first foldable is finally, actually real. And it has an India date. The iPhone Duo goes on sale here on October 23, 2026, with pre-orders opening on October 16 at 5:30 PM IST. It starts at Rs 2,99,900. Let that number sit for a moment. Three lakh rupees, for a phone that folds. The iPhone Duo price in India makes one thing clear: Apple is not trying to win over foldable skeptics. This is priced like jewelry.

iPhone Duo price in India: the full variant breakdown

Apple announced four storage options, all starting uncomfortably high:

  • 256GB: Rs 2,99,900
  • 512GB: Rs 3,24,900
  • 1TB: Rs 3,74,900
  • 2TB: Rs 4,49,900

Two colours: Starry Night and White Sky. The timing is no accident. An October 23 sale puts the Duo right in the middle of the Diwali shopping window, when India spends money it does not have all year. For context, the Vivo X Fold 6 is tipped to launch in India at Rs 2,19,999 on October 6, so Apple’s foldable will cost Rs 80,000 more than its closest Chinese rival before either phone even leaves the store.

The screen ratio is the smartest thing about this phone

Here is what actually impressed me. The Duo uses a passport-style “pocket book” fold with a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, and both panels share roughly the same 1.42:1 aspect ratio, modeled on A-series paper proportions. Apps resize cleanly between the two screens instead of jumping around. Nobody else does this. Samsung’s foldables have always felt like two mismatched displays bolted together; Apple started with the aspect ratio and built the software assumptions around it.

Both screens are LTPO OLED with 120Hz ProMotion, and the inner display gets a matte nano-texture finish that Apple says greatly reduces the fold crease. Greatly reduces, not eliminates. The crease is still there if you look for it. Open, the phone is 5.2mm thin. Closed, 11.3mm. It weighs 254g, heavier than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, though the weight sits low in the hand.

Two 48MP cameras and zero telephoto

This is where I stop nodding. For Rs 3 lakh, the iPhone Duo ships with a dual 48MP fusion camera setup and no telephoto lens at all. In 2026. The iPhone 18 Pro sitting next to it on stage got a mechanical variable aperture for its 48MP main camera, and the Xiaomi 18 Pro ships with two 200MP cameras including a Leica periscope. The Duo’s camera hardware reads like a regular Pro phone that happens to fold, not a flagship that justifies a three-lakh price.

The inner display hides an under-display camera for video calls, which is genuinely useful. But zoom photography on a foldable this expensive is going to be a crop-and-pray situation. Apple clearly decided the fold itself was the headline and everything else just needed to be good enough. It is good enough. That is the problem.

Touch ID is back, and so is eSIM-only

Because the Face ID sensors could not fit inside the 5.2mm display bezels, Apple has dropped Face ID on the Duo. In its place: a side-mounted Touch ID sensor in the power button, plus Apple Watch unlock. Touch ID, in 2026, on the most expensive iPhone ever sold. It will probably work fine. It still tells you everything about the engineering compromises inside this chassis.

Then there is the SIM situation. The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, with no physical SIM slot and no Action button either. Here is my editorial aside: India is a dual-SIM country. People carry a work number and a personal number, swap SIMs at airports, juggle prepaid deals. eSIM-only is fine for frequent travelers who already know the dance. For everyone else, it is friction at the exact moment they are spending three lakh rupees. Apple will convert them eventually. It will not be painless.

Everything else is exactly what you would expect. The A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process with 12GB RAM, the same silicon as the iPhone 18 Pro line. iOS 27. Grade 5 titanium frame, IP68 rating, Ceramic Shield 2 on the outside surfaces. Support for the Apple Pencil (USB-C), which is an odd flex on a phone but a fun one. Battery figures are unconfirmed, but expect Apple to talk about “all-day” without giving you a number.

So, who is this actually for?

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 owners looking to switch, and rich Apple loyalists who want the first foldable from Cupertino regardless of the spec sheet. That is a small audience, and Apple knows it. The Duo does not need to sell in volume. It needs to exist so that foldables become premium computing platforms instead of experimental hardware, and so Apple can say it got there first in its own way.

The launch timing gives it one genuine advantage. Going on sale during Diwali with pre-orders opening on October 16 means the Duo lands when Indians are most willing to stretch. For everyone else, the sensible move is the same as it always is with first-generation Apple hardware: admire the engineering, note the compromises, and wait for the Duo 2 to get the telephoto this one should have had.
